Students learning how t install solar panel.

Seven Sherman Indian High School seniors enrolled in the Residential and Commercial Construction CTE pathway are learning what it takes to install solar panels by participating in the GRID Alternatives Solar Futures program. The Solar Futures program strives to train students on various solar panel installation techniques, electrical wiring and job site safety. This two-month training program allows students to gain hands-on experience and education by participating in mock projects that will prepare them for a successful career in the solar industry.

Sherman students received seven hours of in-class solar training, including career planning and tips on navigating the apprenticeship and hiring process. Students also received eight hours of hands-on training on a mock roof at the GRID service center in Riverside, California. Finally, the training concluded with the students earning 32 internship hours as they worked alongside a GRID installation crew while they installed solar panels on homes in a local neighborhood.

Instructor Brian Hayden said that upon completing this program “students will have earned two industry-recognized certifications and a certificate indicating the skills they have mastered during the training series. These achievements will give students a head start should they decide to pursue a career in solar installation upon graduation. I am proud of these students and look forward to their continued success.”
