At Sherman Indian High School, we are committed to providing comprehensive student services that ensure academic success, personal growth and well-being. From counseling and academic programs to financial aid assistance and behavioral support, our student services are designed to meet the needs of our diverse student body.

Academic Support

We strive to prepare students for post-secondary success through structured academic programs and personalized support:

  • College Counseling: Students receive guidance to create a Plan A, Plan B and Plan C for their future, with options such as college, military service, or career pathways. School counselors help with college applications, personal statements and understanding admission requirements.
  • Cyber High: This alternative program helps students make up credits, improve grades and transition smoothly into regular schedules. Cyber High is also available for students who must remain academically engaged while out of school for cultural or health reasons.
  • FAFSA and Financial Aid Workshops: Counselors assist students and families in navigating the Free Application for Federal Student Aid process. Workshops occur from November through February to ensure families meet state and college deadlines.
  • Career Exploration: Students attend an annual College/Career Day and visit campuses such as UCLA, UC Riverside and Cal Poly Pomona. Counselors help students match their interests with potential careers and educational opportunities.

Health and Wellness Services

We recognize the importance of holistic health to a student’s success. Sherman Indian High School provides:

  • Indian Health Service Clinic: On-campus services include medical and behavioral health support.
  • Home Living Counseling Tech: Counselors assist students with homesickness, grief, substance abuse and decision-making, helping them navigate life challenges in a supportive environment.

Behavioral Support: The Choice Program

The Choice Program is an intervention program for students who have committed a major violation of school policy. It offers structured support to address behavioral concerns while maintaining academic engagement. Program details include:

  • Assignments for a specific number of days, depending on the offense.
  • A focus on personal accountability, reflection and structure.
  • Restrictions on privileges and extracurricular participation during the program.

Refusal to attend the Choice Program results in immediate administrative action and further disciplinary review.

Student Bank

The Student Bank helps students manage their finances safely and securely:

  • Students can cash money orders, cashier checks and state/government checks.
  • Parents/guardians can send money directly to the Student Bank and request that funds be distributed at a specific rate to their child.
  • Students are encouraged to limit their cash on campus to $100 or less. Parents may use services such as Western Union or MoneyGram for urgent needs.

Advancement Via Individual Determination

The AVID Program is a structured college-preparatory elective designed for motivated, college-bound students. Through AVID, students:

  • Complete rigorous coursework to ensure college readiness.
  • Participate in tutorials and college readiness activities.
  • Engage in extracurricular activities and community service.

AVID aims to close the achievement gap, helping students prepare for and succeed in higher education.

Comprehensive Support for Post-Secondary Life

Preparing for life after high school is a key focus at Sherman Indian High School. We ensure students are equipped with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed in college and beyond:

  • College Preparation: Students are encouraged to meet the “a–g” subject requirements, which are a set of high school courses required by the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems for freshman eligibility. These courses cover seven subject areas, including English, math, science, social science, a foreign language, visual and performing arts and college-preparatory electives. Counselors guide students in planning their coursework to meet these rigorous standards.
  • Campus Visits: Students explore a variety of post-secondary institutions through organized trips to universities such as UCLA, UC Riverside and Cal Poly Pomona.
  • Tribal Scholarships: Many tribes require completing the FAFSA and submitting the Student Aid Report for higher education scholarship applications. Counselors assist students with meeting these requirements.

At Sherman Indian High School, we aim to ensure every student thrives by addressing their academic, behavioral and personal needs. Our dedicated counselors and support staff work closely with students and families to provide guidance and encouragement every step of the way.
