Sherman Indian High School

Sherman Indian High School offers a variety of activities to help students explore their interests, strengthen leadership skills and foster cultural pride. Our programs, events and clubs cater to various interests, encouraging each student to find a meaningful role within the school community.

Student Government: The Inter-Tribal Council

The Inter-Tribal Council serves as Sherman Indian High School's student government, representing student interests and organizing major school events, including spirit weeks, homecoming and the Miss Sherman Pageant. ITC meets weekly and welcomes all students, offering opportunities to participate in leadership roles.

  • ITC Officer Roles:
    • President: Plans agendas, delegates tasks and oversees council operations.
    • Vice-President: Assists the President and stands in as needed.
    • Secretary: Records meeting minutes and prepares agendas.
    • Treasurer: Manages financial records and reports.
    • Sergeant at Arms: Maintains order during meetings.
    • Pep Commissioners: Promote school spirit and make announcements.
    • School Board Representative: Reports to the board on student events and concerns.
    • Public Relations: Acts as a student and community liaison.
  • Eligibility Requirements: All ITC officers must maintain a 2.0 GPA and a clean disciplinary record.

Cultural Programs and Clubs

Our culturally focused clubs and events allow students to deepen their connections to their heritage through activities such as:

  • Sons and Daughters of Tradition: Students' cultural and leadership program.
  • Drum Group, Hoop Dance Lessons and Powwow Nights: Held weekly to celebrate and preserve Native dance and music traditions.
  • Special Events: The Native American Film Festival, Sacred Voices Speaker Series and Round Dance Ceremony bring together students and community members to share and celebrate Native stories, traditions and achievements.

Academic and Special Interest Clubs

Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of academic and special interest clubs, each fostering skills in leadership, cooperation and organization:

  • Class Clubs: Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors
  • Inter-Tribal Culture Clubs: Drum and Dance groups, White Rose Singers
  • Dorm Clubs: Ramona Club, Wauneka Club, Winona Club
  • Athletic Clubs: Varsity sports like football, volleyball, basketball, cross-country, baseball, softball and track and field
  • Recreation Clubs: Rec Council and Skaters Club
  • Special Interest Clubs: Music Curators, Cooking, Spiritual, Tribal and Crochet Clubs

Recreational Activities and Off-Campus Trips

Weekly recreational programs ensure students stay active and engaged. Students participate in:

  • Campus Recreation: Gymnasium, weight room and recreation center activities.
  • Cultural Events and Workshops: Beading, music, dance and speaker sessions at the Clarke Cultural Center.
  • Off-Campus Trips: Scheduled outings to beaches, museums and theme parks, allowing students to bond and explore local culture.
